ORMs such as Entity Framework make our lives as developers easier. They abstract the database away from us and even free us from having to write SQL ourselves. But as in real life, nothing in software development comes for free, and our users often pay for our development convenience with performance losses. In this session, we will crack open the Entity Framework “black box” and take a look behind the scenes to understand what Entity Framework really does with our database. We will also discuss the compromises we make when performing common tasks with Entity Framework. Finally, we will look at typical mistakes made when working with Entity Framework that cause unnecessary load on the SQL Server. After the session, you will not only know how to get maximum performance out of Entity Framework and address typical performance issues as they arise, but also how to finally make your DBA smile again despite Entity Framework.
